Role Summary:
The term of appointment will be up to 12 months, subject to renewal starting in July 2025, for work on an externally sponsored research grant.
We are seeking an experienced and highly motivated Research Associate to work in a unique and new research project funded until 2028 by the Qatar Research Development and Innovation Council (QRDI) titled “Rethinking the “Day After”: Post-war reconstruction of the Gaza Strip” led by the Doha Institute for Graduate Studies (DI) represented by Dr. Ghassan El Kahlout, the Lead Principal Investigator and Dr. Sansom Milton, the Principal Investigator. The collaborating institutions are the Arab Center for Research and Policy Studies and the Islamic University in Gaza. A key aim of the research project is to produce a timely and relevant study on the aftermath of the 2023-2025 Israeli war on the Gaza Strip, focusing on the pathways to rebuild and support the territory in the ‘day after.’ It seeks to fill the existing knowledge gaps and provide a Palestinian-led perspective to the post-conflict recovery and reconstruction of the Gaza Strip. The successful applicant will be based at the DI. The project will operate within the Research & Grants Department.
The successful applicant should have at least a Master’s degree in peace and conflict studies, humanitarian studies, post-war recovery, urban planning, development studies, political science, international relations or a closely related field within the social sciences, with a particular emphasis on the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. The ideal candidate should have experience working in a full-time research grant position and possess competence in essential administrative skills. The applicant should have a proven working knowledge and experience of conducting literature reviews, data analysis and writing high quality research papers. The applicant must have excellent attention to detail, organizational and communication skills with a focus on contributing to the collective success of the project.
Key Responsibilities:
- Research & Fieldwork: Support the conduct of qualitative and quantitative research, interviews, and data collection on the ground, including potential travel to conflict-affected regions.
- Stakeholder Engagement: Engage with local partners, translate/interview in Arabic and English, and coordinate workshops.
- Project Outputs: Support the preparation of scholarly articles, policy briefs, and other deliverables as outlined by the project team.
- Administrative Support: Assist in the organization of meetings, events, and travel, and ensure compliance with funder and DI guidelines. Also help in preparing progress reports for the funding agency.
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
MA/MSc specializing in peace and conflict studies, humanitarian studies, post-war recovery, urban planning, development studies, political science, international relations or a closely related field within the social sciences, with a particular emphasis on the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region.
WORK EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
- Minimum of 1 year work experience as a Research Associate
- Preferred experience as a Research Associate in a full-time grant funded position.
- Knowledge of research techniques and methodologies, including development methods such as monitoring and evaluation and/or needs assessments.
- Knowledge of post-war recovery and reconstruction, with experience working on international aid or development projects.
REQUIRED SKILLS:
- Fluency in English and Arabic, and the ability to conduct project activities orally and in writing in both languages.
- Strong analytical and writing skills.
- Strong presentation skills and ability to facilitate activities
- Excellent time management and ability to plan and prioritize own work in order to meet deadlines
- Ability to work in a team.
- Good management, organization, advocacy, and communications skills.
- Motivated and personally engaged in the subject areas of the funded project.
- Culturally adaptable, as evidenced by time spent in diverse cultural environments, particularly in developing countries.
- Attention to detail and commitment to high quality.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Outlook, Word and Excel
